EcoShield Secondary Glazing Scottish heritage branding

Preserve your timber windows while tackling outside noise.

A heritage-sensitive approach

Original sash and case windows contribute to the appearance of many Scottish homes. Internal secondary glazing offers a way to improve comfort while retaining those existing frames.

Choosing an opening style

Vertical sliding, hinged and lift-out systems serve different access, cleaning and ventilation requirements. We recommend an option after considering the existing window and available reveals.

Survey and detailing

Frame condition, shutter boxes, mouldings, handles and opening clearance must be checked. The installation should respect historic fabric and any relevant consents.

Acoustic performance

Glazing selection, spacing, seals and the surrounding structure influence results. Ask for the applicable Granada technical documentation for the proposed configuration.

Technical guide: selecting acoustic glazing for your property

Specifying around original sash and case windows

Secondary glazing can introduce an independent internal barrier while leaving the original sash and case window in place. Check sash operation, shutters, reveal depth, frame condition and cleaning access before choosing a vertical slider, hinged or other system.

Understanding acoustic glazing test figures

Manufacturers may quote Rw, a laboratory weighted sound reduction index in decibels. Rw + C and Rw + Ctr are spectrum-adapted ratings; Ctr is especially relevant when assessing noise containing more low-frequency energy, such as road traffic. These values are not a promise of the decibel reduction measured inside an occupied room.

What determines the finished result?

The original window, the separation between the panes, glazing composition, perimeter seals and installation detailing all affect acoustic performance. Air leakage and sound passing through vents, walls or adjoining construction can limit the benefit. The right solution is chosen for the complete window and the actual noise source, not by glass thickness alone.
