EcoShield Secondary Glazing Scottish heritage branding

Specialist secondary glazing for Edinburgh’s traditional homes.

Period homes and city noise

Edinburgh has a varied stock of tenements, Georgian and Victorian properties where original windows may contribute to the building’s character. Busy streets can make noise reduction a priority.

Survey-led specification

We assess each enquiry for suitability, access and installation coverage before committing to a project. For listed buildings, obtain relevant consent where required.

Preserving sash and case windows

An internal secondary glazing system may help retain existing timber windows while improving comfort. The system and glass are selected around the actual opening and performance goals.

Technical guide: selecting acoustic glazing for your property

Acoustic design for Edinburgh properties

In tenements and other period properties, street traffic, late-night activity and older window seals can contribute to noise intrusion. A survey should consider the noise source, existing sash condition, any ventilation routes and the internal space available for a discreet secondary unit.

Understanding acoustic glazing test figures

Manufacturers may quote Rw, a laboratory weighted sound reduction index in decibels. Rw + C and Rw + Ctr are spectrum-adapted ratings; Ctr is especially relevant when assessing noise containing more low-frequency energy, such as road traffic. These values are not a promise of the decibel reduction measured inside an occupied room.

What determines the finished result?

The original window, the separation between the panes, glazing composition, perimeter seals and installation detailing all affect acoustic performance. Air leakage and sound passing through vents, walls or adjoining construction can limit the benefit. The right solution is chosen for the complete window and the actual noise source, not by glass thickness alone.
